❥ Folkmore Roles & Attributes

Skills:

-being a pain in the ass little shit :')
-no canon skills of note, but my headcanon has him having some farming knowledge (that he'd never use or admit to!)
-general public education studies and he's a better student than he'd admit

Canon Abilities: Pyrokinesis, but cannot create fire of his own, but can control the hell out of any spark/size of fire.
Role: Myth
Role Qualities/Attributes: Can create fire, but with mixed results (based on intention/mood/emotion, it's a real mixed bag! will absolutely be used for smol fires or wacky results rather than abusing the ability) -- If he can't do that right off the bat, then just some little black stubby horns on his head will be just fine instead.
Role Reasoning: John will feel most comfortable in this role, and as much as I want to push him and explore his motivations, I do think a starting point where he feels acknowledged as a darker soul makes sense. He'll settle in and want to find his fellow myth peers, plus probably fall back on old habits of criticizing those good Legends. Him being comfy as a myth puts him in a place for me to choose any manner of paths for him -- for him to potentially get deep into some shit or maybe learn more about control. He could align more chaotic or good in really interesting ways when this part of his identity is given all the room to exist.

❥ Personality

Option 2.

OPTION 2 QUESTIONS:

  • What was the most traumatic experience your character endured? How did this change them?

Going to the Institute, realizing how utterly humans do not understand mutants. This made him angrier and bitter, leading to always having to put on a veneer of not giving a fuck whilst he absolutely does care. Before his mutant gene showed, he was a little rebel without a cause, bound and determined to wreck some havoc until he was old enough to leave his shitty little town. Having it manifest was traumatic (details are headcanon!), and naturally he had no idea what the fuck was going on, and once he got to the school...well, he had to learn how to use his ability, but he was also scolded when he used it in a way that felt natural to him (causing a little mayhem and mischief!) Even at the Institute, he belongs better than on the outside, but he still feels very much like an outsider among most of his fellow mutants. Coming to the Institute helped him to harness his ability more, to be more genuine to himself, but he's still an angry teenager. He can be his more authentic self, yet with reins he'd rather not be present at all.

  • What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why?

John's best friend, Bobby Drake - They clash often, and John knows how much more powerful in mutant ability than himself Bobby really is. He's his closest friend at the Institute (I headcanon that they met after coming in the same year and felt like rivals since their abilities are fire and ice, but it evolved into a close friendship.) They fight and disagree but eventually do come back to one another. He's the only person that John has ever let close, sharing physical spaces at school and honestly trauma bonding. He'll tease and harp on Bobby for being goody goody, but there's probably a degree of envy too, in the other young man being widely accepted at the Institute.

The collective of professors - John definitely has too cool for school vibes, but the Institute is the only place where he's ever felt comfortable or like it's really home. He hates listening to them if he's being scolded or gets into trouble for being a hothead/reckless, but they are in essence his guardians and thus have a huge impact on how he grows up as a teen.

John's biological family is of course headcanon, but he felt largely the same about them as he does his professors. Parents suck, but you have to listen to them so you don't get into too much trouble. They were on a partially working farm and religious too, both of which John just is not about. They were quick to abandon their son too, so they're dead to him.

  • What is a headcanon (or two) you feel strongly about and that you prefer playing your character with? How is this supported in canon and why do you think it benefits the character's story?

John is an only child from rural New Jersey, where he never felt like he quite fit in (different interests than his peers, didn't care about local sports or farming or living that simple life.) He'd act out with minor vandalism to property, getting into physical fights, having a temper that flared up easily. All a progression of behavior as he aged. He faced the most severe consequence after his mutation manifested. At a homecoming bonfire, he got upset at a classmate and accidentally burned their feet and legs, but it was said and thought by nearby kids that he'd pushed them into the fire. He came to the Institute instead of going to juvie, after Charles learned of him, and his parents were fine to unburden themselves with their troublemaker kid.

I think this is supported in canon because John has a huge chip on his shoulder, one that has to come from some sort of foundational trauma rather than simply being different than the majority of the population. In this headcanon, his family turns their back on him in being willing to allow him to be taken care of by an unfamiliar place/school.

  • If you could give your character a Taylor Swift playlist, which songs would be on it and what would they represent about your character?

Picture to Burn: a love (hate) letter to anyone and everything in his rural past.

Haunted: much as John wants revenge on everyone who ever hurt him in his past, he's still got a heart. he doesn't let anyone very close, but he does feel haunted by the people who so easily abandoned him.

Bad Blood: the perspective that John thinks people who he's hurt look at him through. he's really dynamite at letting bad blood spill.

Style: a shipping song for him and Bobby, but also one that reflects on friendship rather than romance (since I headcanon that there's attraction there that he hasn't expressed) ; and the polar opposite rivalry aspects of their abilities create a certain kind of style he's sure is always 'in'

New Romantics: how John thinks the younger mutants could proclaim and show off their abilities to the rest of the world. they're badass and should want to be free and also probably out from under the thumb of professors >:|

Gorgeous: how he feels about his stupid dumbass hot bestie, Bobby

Look What You Made Me Do: if bitches fuck around and find out, then they're going to be burned and is that really John's fault when someone deserves it?

Delicate: another shipping song for Bobby, who clearly likes him for him and wow, what a fragile notion that is

I Did Something Bad: there's no time where Bobby feels quite as good, like he's having the most fun, as when he's burning something up, and that it's bad (and acknowledged as such) makes it even better

End Game: John wants a place where he can be fully himself/be useful to the team, and he absolutely doesn't think that that place is with Xavier but he still wants to be on the MAIN team

  • Is your character capable of forgiveness or will they hold a grudge until they die? Would anything ever make them change their mind?

He'll hold a grudge until his dying breath. It's easy to see from the scoffs and annoyances in his expressions when someone scolds him that he takes it as a deep cut when called out for simply using his abilities. What else is he supposed to do? Not? I don't think that Bobby has ever done anything to betray his trust, that their disagreements have always been vibrantly felt but he's John's only friend really SO much as he's annoyed by him and his goody two shoes attitude, there's rarely anything to actually forgive. But he appears to be so full of hatred for Rogue when she drains his ability to stop the fires he sets on the cops who show up to try to arrest them at Bobby's parents house (HE WAS HELPING), and I don't think he'll forgive her for that.

He's from an earlier point than The Last Stand film but in his future, he chooses to side with Magento's Brotherhood. The X-Men weren't willing to let him come out and be useful (his perception), so he went somewhere that he could fully flourish. He became Magneto's right hand mind seamlessly, something of a pawn to heel upon command, but he was full and absolute in switched loyalty. The X-Men essentially betrayed him by not allowing him to be a full part of the team, and he doesn't hesitate in fighting them thereafter.

John doesn't want to be told what to do, and since he's so chaotic at times (could really hurt people and has), there's nothing that will change his mind in deciding that someone who's crossed him can be worthy of his time and energy. Thems the breaks.
